I once mentioned that the only tattoo I'd better see on my son was a temporary "I Love You Mom" tattoo. One of the coolest cheap Mothers Day gift ideas around, temporary tattoos can be remembered with a photograph long after they've worn off.
So, tat up: roll that sleeve up or take that shirt off, take a picture, then glue it to colored paper. And now you've got one of the most fabulous personalized gifts for Mothers Day!
Flowers are always perfect Mothers Day gifts, and no page that's all about cheap Mothers Day gift ideas would be complete without an exhaustive list of how to present flowers in the most memorable ways possible.
WHAT TO GROW
Cut Flowers: Tulips are my absolute favorite of all cut flowers. They say spring, they smell good, and they come in lots of colors. So, if you opt to do your own thing, consider these alternatives:
|• Japanese Iris
|• Gerbera Daisies
|• Asiatic Lilies
|• Mini Carnations
Bulbs: Sometimes the real gift is giving a present that the recipient gets to watch grow. Bulbs are fun and last a lot longer than fresh-cut flowers, too.
- Grape Hyacinth
- Mini Daffodils
- Tulips, of course
Succulents: These plants live forever indoors. And depending on where you live, they're hardy outdoors, too. Given that they'll cheer the lucky person to receive them for years to come, they make really great Mother's Day plants.
- Hens and Chicks: They come in many varieties...large leaf, small leaf, red, green, purple. They're very, very pretty and make a cool bouquet.
- Cactus: Gather together a mixture of types, and be sure to include some that are in bloom.
- Sedum: Like hens and chicks, sedums come in many different varieties. Some even hang over the sides of their containers like vines.
Herbs: The most useful of plants, these can be kept in the kitchen and snipped when needed.
WHAT TO PUT IT IN
To go with the theme of cheap Mothers Day gift ideas, you should really "find" the pot for your lovely home-grown greenery. That might mean it may not be exactly a pot, right? So much the better. Keep on the lookout for these eye-catching containers:
- Mismatched vintage teacup and saucer
- Small pitcher
- Old colored glass bottle
- Tin can with a really cool label, or spray paint it in a vibrant color
- Vintage glass milk bottle
- Polka dot, striped, solid, plaid, or terra cotta bowl
- Vintage box with a glass jar inside for cut flowers
- Mortar and pestle (goes especially well with herbs)
What a natural twosome: Mother's Day gifts and flowers. Add the perfect ribbon to the duo (see homemade Mothers Day gifts for more details) and you have the greatest Mothers Day presents ever. Can't beat the fact that they're also a very cheap Mothers Day gift idea, while still exuding creative classiness!
That's right, I said bedazzle. Add a little sparkle to the beach this summer and bedazzle a pair of $5 flip flops for Mom this year. If you can find them cheaper than $5, you go girl (or guy).
How do you turn ordinary, utilitarian footwear into glittery wonders? Add craft store gems with your glue gun. A cheap Mothers Day gift idea that's quick, easy, and really fun to do and wear!
The ultimate in cheap Mothers Day gift ideas, a heart-shaped ornament that you make for Mother's Day can be used for numerous other occasions as well. Remember to bring it out of storage to hang on the tree at Christmastime, and take a picture of it with you for a Valentine's Day card. Three holidays for the price of one is surely the sign of a really good Mothers Day gift.
Supplies: Bowl; rolling pin; cookie sheet; heart-shaped cookie cutter; twine, ribbon, or string.
Dough: 1/2 cup salt, 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup water.
How you do it: Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F. Mix the salt, flour, and water in the bowl to make your dough. Sprinkle some flour on the counter and knead the dough until it is no longer sticky. Roll out the dough to a little less than 1/4" thick with a rolling pin that has been dusted with flour.
Use the cookie cutter to cut hearts from the dough. Use a straw to make a hole at the top of each heart so you can thread twine, ribbon, or string for hanging once the hearts are cooked. Place on cookie sheet, put them in the oven, and bake for 2 hours.
One caveat: although baked, these "cookies" are strictly for hanging, not nibbling.
Mother's Day is all about Mom getting a break from taking care of everyone else, right? So how about turning the tables and transporting her back to a time when she was the one being taken care of. A personalized miniature toy chest is the perfect DIY Mothers Day gift.
Start with a small chest. If that's not readily available, get a small box (even a shoe box will do), then cover it in pretty wrapping paper. Next, gather inexpensive toys from Mom's childhood. Think jacks, bubbles, slinky, jump rope, plastic necklace, sidewalk chalk.
Aww, what the heck, go ahead and throw some penny candy in there while you're at it. My favorites: squirrel nuts (are they even around anymore?), Bazooka bubble gum, red hot dollars, banana splits (the candy squares, not the ice cream), and cherry licorice shoestrings.
Now give her a quiet corner to play in without being disturbed, and you've got a winner!
For last minute Mother's Day gifts that are also really cheap Mothers Day gift ideas, go for a simple message. What mother doesn't want to hear that she's the best? And who wouldn't want to hear it day after day? No one, right? Right.
How to write it:
- In sand at the beach
- With chalk on driveway or sidewalk
- Spelled out with magnet letters on the fridge
- With a soft pencil on textured paper, photographed really close up
- Painted on a small canvas
So go ahead and write that special message. ("Mom, You're the Best" will do just fine, thank you very much.) Then take a picture, frame the picture, and by golly you've put into play a really great, really simple, desirably cheap Mothers Day gift idea!
